Artificial intelligence is no longer something that belongs only to Silicon Valley.

What Is Kenya Doing About AI?

AI is becoming significant enough for the Kenyan government to develop national policy around it.

Kenya’s National AI Strategy 2025–2030 provides a framework for AI development and adoption, while the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy has been working on policy covering AI and other emerging technologies. In July 2026, the ministry opened public participation on a draft Kenya Artificial Intelligence and other Emerging Technologies Policy.

This matters because the impact of AI will not be determined by technology alone.

Government policies will influence issues such as:

  • Data governance
  • Innovation
  • AI regulation
  • Employment
  • Digital infrastructure
  • Responsible AI adoption

For Kenya, the challenge is to make sure AI creates opportunities rather than simply increasing inequality.

So, Will AI Take Jobs in Kenya?

Yes—but probably not in the way many people imagine.

AI is unlikely to wake up one morning and eliminate entire professions across Kenya.

Instead, the transformation is likely to happen gradually.

Some tasks will disappear.

Some jobs will require fewer workers.

Some salaries and job descriptions will change.

Some professions will become more productive.

And completely new opportunities will emerge.

The workers most at risk are not necessarily those working in a particular profession.

They may be workers whose skills remain limited to repetitive tasks that AI can perform faster and more cheaply.

At the same time, workers who learn how to combine AI with human skills could become significantly more valuable.

The question, therefore, should not simply be:

“Will AI take my job?”

A better question is:

“How can I use AI before someone else does?”

For Kenyan workers, students, entrepreneurs and businesses, that may be the more important question of the next decade.

 

AI is going to change Kenya’s labour market.

There will be winners, losers and many people somewhere in between.

Data-entry workers may face automation. Customer-service roles may become more automated. Basic content production and administrative work may require fewer people.

But AI will also create opportunities in technology, cybersecurity, data, automation, digital services and entirely new areas that are difficult to predict today.

The safest career strategy may therefore not be finding a job that AI can never touch.

It is developing skills that become more valuable when AI is available.

Kenya’s future workforce will need both technology skills and distinctly human abilities—creativity, judgement, communication, leadership, adaptability and problem-solving.

AI may take some jobs.

But people who learn to work with AI could be the ones who take the opportunities that come next.
